Many members of the Department responded directly to the Oakland conflagration without being recalled.

These men and women weren't ordered to respond, but did so because of their personal dedication to duty and to the fire service.

Their actions in fighting the Oakland conflagration are in the highest tradition of the San Francisco Fire Department.
